Getting flag emoji on Windows (11)

Due to political reasons, Microsoft has actively refused to add flag emojis on Windows 11. Given how common flag emojis are, it’s honestly more annoying than I thought it’d be, especially when discussing international events like Eurovision where these emoji would be useful. People use these flags to denote their nationality, or a country they are supporting. For example, when someone has several Palestinian flag emoji in their username in solidarity with Palestine, it looks like they’re trying to get a cat’s attention because it comes out as PSPSPSPS on Windows.

Thankfully, it’s as easy as just installing this font, which is just Segoe UI Emoji repackaged with Twemoji’s flags. Install the font as administrator, reboot your PC, and you should have flag emoji everywhere.

I can confirm it works on:

  • web browsers/frameworks – Electron apps, for example
  • WinUI apps (Notepad, Apple Music, Settings)
  • Avalonia apps (Tag Hierarchy Manager)

It does not work on anything using legacy rendering – WinForms apps like MusicBee, for example, do not show these emoji, and tend to fall back to black and white emoji. Windows Explorer also does the same in the main element as it’s not using WinUI.
